Critical Role Campaign 4 Introduces the Fighters Group

Since the launch of Campaign 4, recently appointed game master the talented storyteller has kept fans guessing with extensive world-building, a wide array of characters, and a thrilling plot showcasing divine entities, evil spirits, and dark forces growing in power within the urban setting.

Note: Spoilers for the third episode of this adventure follow below.

The Soldiers Table Unveiled

The latest chapter ended with a dramatic pause and revealed the premier party of characters who will branch out from the main group to begin their own adventure, apart from the remaining groups.

This warrior group features the determined fighter (brought to life by Travis), the agile character (Laura), the strong-willed figure (the cast member), Wicander (Sam Riegel), and the mysterious adventurer (Robbie Daymond).

Dividing the Cast

With a large ensemble, it was obvious from the start that having everyone at a single group would be unfeasible.

That’s why, the initial installments of the new season serve as an Prelude, intertwining the personal journeys before branching into three distinct groups: Soldiers, Strategists, and Seekers.

Characteristics of the Combat Party

According to Brennan Lee Mulligan, the Soldiers table is for adventurers who enjoy a typically action-packed battle-oriented narrative style where diplomatic options are scarce.

At first glance, characters like the reluctant priest Wicander might appear out of place, but the actions of the latest installment make it clear why these particular heroes are best suited for the Soldiers table.

Why They Must Go

First, the team understands precisely where to go next after a intense opening clash with the enemy group.

A former ally of Thjazi Fang—whose demise started the story’s plot—manipulated the enemy for his personal gain, invading the secret base, striking Thimble, and swiping all the powerful objects to sell off.

The traitor then cleared his obligations and escaped to a fortified location in the remote area, beyond Dol-Makjar, with Cyd Pridesire hot on his heels.

Character Drivers

Moreover, each character has a personal reason to depart the urban setting:

  • The rogue, as Thjazi’s partner and closest confidant, wants revenge.
  • The adventurer is familiar with the northern area and cautions that it is a dangerous environment.
  • Tyranny and Wicander, having resisted his relatives’ demands to execute the fighter and instead freed him, have no other options.
  • But, their position as important members in House Halovar could enable the party access areas they typically wouldn’t be able to.
  • Moreover, The fighter swore a life debt to Wicander for his rescue and will now go with him anywhere.

Pursued by Authorities

Finally, all of them are wanted by the rulers that rule Dol-Makjar for a range of causes, making remaining behind dangerous:

  • The agile adventurer and The character are notorious outlaws.
  • The warrior and The cleric betrayed the powerful family and the horde of evil beings they are aligned with.
  • The fighter is targeted for elimination by the family.

This leaves them few options but to head to Timmony in search of the antagonist.

Future Episodes

According to episode three’s follow-up content, we find out that the warrior group will be absent the following episode, leaving the other eight participants to round up the Explorers and Planners tables.

Viewers can look forward to finding out which characters will be in which group in the story’s last Overture episode, available to watch on October 24.
